WHAT DOES THE NAME “MARY” MEAN?
“And the Virgin’s name was Mary (Lk 1:27).”
In Hebrew, the name Mary (derived from “Miryam“) could mean literally many things: drop of sea (stilla Maris), beloved, rebellious, bitterness or beautiful. In Syriac, however, it means “Lady“.
However, its spiritual meaning is “Star of the Sea” = stella maris. Stella maris is a modification of stilla Maris (St. Jerome’s Latin Vulgate translation of Miryam) carried out by a scribe and was later accepted by spiritual writers because it describes the fact that in her womb Mary bore the Lord of the universe, the undimming Light of the world to all peoples.
Throughout the centuries, the saints had different interpretations of the name of Mary.
As all mothers desire that their children are always near them, even if they are already grown-ups, let us always have recourse to our Mother, calling her name, not only when we are in need, but in every moment of our life, as a manifestation of our filial love and devotion.
Mother Mary, we call upon you as always. Despise us not in our necessities, but ever help us in all our endeavours. Lead us safely to our heavenly port. A great day ahead, united with God through Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Fr. Rolly Arjonillo
