POPE FRANCIS’ REFLECTION ON THE PARABLE OF THE DISHONEST MANAGER
Jesus said to his disciples, โA rich man had a steward who was reported to him for squandering his property. He summoned him and said, โWhat is this I hear about you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward.โ The steward said to himself, โWhat shall I do, now that my master is taking the position of steward away from me? I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg. I know what I shall do so that, when I am removed from the stewardship, they may welcome me into their homes.โ He called in his masterโs debtors one by one. To the first he said, โHow much do you owe my master?โ He replied, โOne hundred measures of olive oil.โ He said to him, โHere is your promissory note. Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.โ Then to another he said, โAnd you, how much do you owe?โ He replied, โOne hundred measures of wheat.โ He said to him, โHere is your promissory note; write one for eighty.โ And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently. For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than the children of light.โ -Lk 16:1-8

POPE FRANCISโ HOMILY: Dirty bread of corruptionย Friday, 8 November 2013ย (byย LโOsservatore Romano, Weekly ed. in English, n. 46, 15 November 2013)
In his homily during Holy Mass in the Chapel of Santa Marta, Pope Francis commented on the parable of the dishonest steward taken from the Gospel of St Luke (16:1-8).
The Holy Father began: โThe Lord speaks to us again about the spirit of the world, about worldliness: how this worldliness works and how perilous it is. In his prayer after the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, Jesus besought the Father not to allow his disciples to fall into worldlinessโ.
The Pope reaffirmed that โworldliness is the enemyโ, and โthe devil derives great pleasureโ from seeing us live according to its ways. He pointed to the dishonest steward described in the Gospel as an example of worldliness. โSome of you might say: โBut this man only did what everyone does!โ. No, not everyone! Some company administrators, public administrators, government administrators โฆ but perhaps not many. Itโs an attitude of taking short cuts, of taking the easy road to earn a livingโ.
โThe master praises the dishonest steward in the Gospelโ, the Pope continued. โHE IS PRAISING BRIBERY. THE HABIT OF BRIBES AND KICKBACKS IS A WORLDLY AND EXTREMELY SINFUL HABITโฆ. GOD COMMANDED US TO BRING HOME BREAD THROUGH HONEST WORKโ. INSTEAD โTHIS STEWARD WAS GIVING DIRTY BREAD TO HIS CHILDREN TO EAT. AND HIS CHILDREN, WHO PERHAPS WERE EDUCATED IN EXPENSIVE UNIVERSITIES AND WERE RAISED IN VERY CULTURED CIRCLES, WERE FED DIRT BY THEIR FATHER. FOR IN BRINGING HOME UNCLEAN BREAD, THEIR FATHER LOST HIS DIGNITY. AND THIS IS A GRAVE SIN. IT MIGHT START WITH A SMALL BRIBE, BUT IT IS LIKE A DRUGโ.
Pope Francis explained, in fact, THAT IT IS A SERIOUS SIN โBECAUSE IT IS SO AGAINST OUR DIGNITYโ. โTHAT DIGNITY BY WHICH WE ARE UNITED THROUGH OUR WORK. NOT THROUGH BRIBES AND KICKBACKS. NOT THROUGH THIS ADDICTION TO WORLDLY CUNNING. WHEN WE READ IN THE PAPERS OR HEAR SOMEONE ON THE NEWS SPEAK ABOUT CORRUPTION, PERHAPS WE THINK THAT CORRUPTION IS JUST A WORD. THIS IS CORRUPTION: NOT EARNING OUR DAILY BREAD WITH DIGNITYโ.
However, the Holy Father noted, there is another road, an alternative route to worldly cunning. It is the path of โChristian clevernessโ. This path, he said, โallows us to be cunning but not according to the spirit of the world. Jesus himself said it: be wise as serpents, innocent as dovesโ. Uniting these two realities is a grace and a gift of the Holy Spirit, the Pope said. โThis Christian cleverness is a gift; it is a grace that the Lord gives to us. But we need to ask for itโ.
Pope Francis then turned his attention to the families of the worldโs dishonest stewards. โPERHAPS TODAY,โ HE SAID, โIT WOULD BE GOOD FOR ALL OF US TO PRAY FOR THE MANY CHILDREN WHO RECEIVE DIRTY BREAD FROM THEIR PARENTS, SINCE THEY TOO ARE HUNGRY; THEY ARE HUNGRY FOR DIGNITYโ.
The Holy Father concluded by inviting all of those present โTO ASK THE LORD TO CHANGE THE HEARTS OF THOSE WHO ARE DEVOTED TO THE GODDESS OF BRIBERYโ IN ORDER THAT โTHEY MIGHT UNDERSTAND THAT DIGNITY COMES FROM NOBLE WORK, FROM HONEST WORK, FROM DAILY WORK, AND NOT FROM THE EASY ROAD WHICH IN THE END STRIPS YOU OF EVERYTHINGโ. For when they face death, he said, โthese poor people who lose their dignity through the practice of bribery do not take with them the money they earned; they only take their lack of dignity. Let us pray for themโ.
