The Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was probably originated shortly before or after the council of Ephesus (c. 431). It was the moment when St. Gabriel the Archangel communicated to Mary that she was to be the Mother of the Son of God. Through her free and willing consent to God’s plans, she took part in the whole redemptive work of her Son, Jesus. We venerate her as the Mother of Christ and our Mother.
Let us thank Our Lady for her generous response –Fiat! Let it be done to me according to Thy Word!– through which Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, Our Savior, was made flesh and lived among us. May we also be men and women of “yes” to God’s Will so as to glorify and serve Him as instruments of His eternal plan of salvation.
O God, who willed that your Word should take on the reality of human flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary, grant, we pray, that we, who confess our Redeemer to be God and man, may merit to become partakers even in his divine nature. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
