GOSPEL OF THURSDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
Mk 4:21–25

PARABLE OF THE LAMP AND MEASURE

Jesus said to his disciples, “Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand? For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light. Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.” He also told them, “Take care what you hear. The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you, and still more will be given to you. To the one who has, more will be given; from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

GOSPEL COMMENTARY

Christians are called to give testimony of Our Lord through their life coherent with the Gospel. This is the central idea which Jesus wants to convey when he tells us of the lamp, which is not to be placed under a bushel, that is, a container used to measure wheat, but in a candlestick. Christians serve to give light that we bear within. That is why we must choose God’s light over darkness.

Today’s Gospel passage also reminds us that: “the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you”. This is why we must struggle always to have a big heart, to be magnanimous for it is the example given to us by God, who, with the greatness of his love, sent us his Only-Begotten Son to save us, in spite of our ingratitude and our lack of correspondence.

Do we strive to illumine our environment with Christ’s life? Are we generous and magnanimous to want the authentic good of others for love of God, overcoming our laziness and going out of ourselves to help others in their needs?

Stay safe and healthy. God bless. Fr. Rolly Arjonillo.

Almighty ever-living God, direct our actions according to your good pleasure, that in the name of your beloved Son we may abound in good works. Through our Lord.

VIDEO COMMENTARY
TOPIC: DO YOU EXPRESS YOUR FAITH IN WORDS AND ACTION?

There are two verses that we can reflect on in today’s first reading (Hebrews 10:19-25 ) and gospel reading (Mark 4:21-25). Hebrews (v. 24) says, “We must consider how to rouse one another to love and good works” and in Mark (v. 21) Jesus says to His disciples, “Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand?”
