THE NEW COMMANDMENT (Jn 13:34).
From the treatise of St. Augustine on the Gospel of St. John (Tract. 65, 1-3_ CCL 36, 490-492)
The Lord Jesus declares that he is giving his disciples a new commandment, that they should love one another: I give you a new commandment: love one another.
But wasn’t this commandment already part of the ancient law of God, where it is written You shall love your neighbour as yourself? Why, then, is it called a new one by the Lord, when it is really so old? Is it new because he has divested us of our old humanity and clothed us with the new? It is true that love renews those who listen to it (or rather, those who act in obedience to it) but it is that particular love which the Lord distinguished from all carnal affection by adding love one another as I have loved you.
This is the love that renews us, making us new men, heirs of the New Testament, singers of the new song. It was this love, my beloved brethren, that renewed the patriarchs and prophets of old, and later renewed the blessed apostles. This is the love that is now renewing the nations, and from among the universal race of man, which overspreads the whole world, is making and gathering together a new people, the body of the newly-married spouse of the only-begotten Son of God. Of her the Song of Songs says, Who is she who is coming up, clothed in white? Clothed in white because she has been renewed; and how else can she have been renewed but by the new commandment?
Because of this, the members of the people of God have a mutual interest in one another; and if one member suffers then all the members suffer with it; and if one member is honoured then all the members rejoice with it. For this they hear and this they observe: I give you a new commandment: love one another: not as people who pretend to love in order to corrupt one another, nor indeed as people love one another genuinely but in a human way. Rather, they love one another as those who belong to God. All of them are children of the Most High and consequently brethren of his only Son. They share with each other the love with which he leads them to the end that will bring them fulfilment and the true satisfaction of their real desires. For when God is all in all, there is no desire that is unfulfilled.
This love is bestowed on us by him who said, Just as I have loved you, you also must love one another. He loved us so that we should love one another. By loving us he bound us to one another in mutual love, and by this gentle bond united us into the body of which he is the most noble Head.
Thanks. I’ve tried using the mobile phone and encountered the same problem. A message from Pinterest saying that “sorry, something wrong went on our side.” Nevertheless, using a computer, I’ve never encountered any problems to share in Pinterest.
Thank you for taking the time to reply, but your answer is far too technical for me! — Probably as complicated as what I tried to describe to you! I do hope it gets fixed soon. These articles are too good not to share.
Hi Sharyn, thanks for the info. I think it is a problem of the recent update of the super socializer plugi. I’ll refer it to the developer. Nevertheless, it also occured to me that when I click on the “Guardar or Save” widget, no picture would appear but the tile of the article does. I clicked on the title and the picture thumbnail of the article appeared which is what I save in the CSFH pinterest board, to which I would refer you if you want to save the above-mentioned articles, under the board “Holy Communion” or “Holy Eucharist”. Perhaps, it would also help that you empty your cache browser. Hope this gets fixed soon. Thanks and God bless!
Just to be clear, I did save one article today. It’s hard to remember exactly how it happened. I wasn’t able to save the exact article from the email. I may have saved it from one of the suggested posts that appear under each article. Two emails were about receiving Holy Communion — parts 1 and 2. I believe when I saved one of them I ended up with an different article on the same subject. I’m sorry that this is so complicated.
I don’t know what you mean by “Guardar,” but I do have a problem when using the Pinterest widget. Usually several images appear, with the description of the article under each of them. When the article is pinned to Pinterest, the article that appears when the pin is opened is not the same as the article that was described under the image — the article I am actually trying to save. Sometimes it is confusing because there is no image actually shown in the article. Today, I had a different experience when I tried to share an article about receiving Holy Communion that did have an image. .When I clicked the Pinterest widget, even though the correct descriptions were there, none of the images that appeared matched the image in the article. I went ahead and tried to pin the article anyway but, as usual, the article that appeared when I opened the pin was not the article that I was attempting to save. It’s very difficult to try to explain this. I hope you can help me. I have not been able to save any of these articles recently.
Hi Sharyn, you could try using the two ways to share in pinterest:
1. click on “Guardar” before the post
2. or click on the pinterest widget after the post.
I am able to share them both ways. Hope it works for you.
Please contact me by email. I enjoy your site so much and have always used it with Pinterest. Please help me resolve this problem.
I am not able to share your articles to Pinterest. Please contact me so I can explain.
