Oct. 2: THE GUARDIAN ANGELS. Mass prayers and proper readings.

Oct. 2:
THE GUARDIAN ANGELS.
Mass prayers and proper readings.

This celebration was placed in the Roman calendar in 1615. Scripture is full of narrations involving the special intervention of angels. The Church believes that each person has his own Guardian Angel. Angels are God’s messengers whose mission is to take care of our material and spiritual needs, to protect us, to show us God’s will, and to guide us to heaven. The New Testament encourages us to imitate the naturalness with which the first Christians dealt with the angels.

 Proper Readings

READING I
Exodus 23:20–23

“See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Be attentive to him and heed his voice. Do not rebel against him, for he will not forgive your sin. My authority resides in him. If you heed his voice and carry out all I tell you, I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes. “My angel will go before you and bring you to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites; and I will wipe them out.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
R. He has put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways

Angelis suis mandábit de te, ut custódiant te in ómnibus viis tuis.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
and abides in the shade of the Almighty
says to the Lord: ‘My refuge,
my stronghold, my God in whom I trust!’
R.
It is he who will free you from the snare
of the fowler who seeks to destroy you;
he will conceal you with his pinions
and under his wings you will find refuge.
R.
His faithfulness is buckler and shield.
You will not fear the terror of the night
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the plague that prowls in the darkness
nor the scourge that lays waste at noon.
R.
Upon you no evil shall fall,
no plague approach where you dwell.
For you has he commanded his angels,
to keep you in all your ways.
R.

READING II (In places where it is a litugical feast)
Rv 12:7–12

Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have salvation and power come, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Anointed. For the accuser of our brothers is cast out, who accuses them before our God day and night. They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; love for life did not deter them from death. Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them. But woe to you, earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you in great fury, for he knows he has but a short time.”

ALLELUIA
Benedícite, Dómino, omnes virtútes eius, minístri eius, qui fácitis voluntátem eius.
Bless the Lord, all you his angels, his ministers who do his will.

GOSPEL
Mt 18:1–5, 10
The disciples approached Jesus and said, “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?” He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.
“See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”
