WEDNESDAY 7TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME GOSPEL COMMENTARY. “WHOEVER IS NOT AGAINST US IS FOR US” (Mk 9:38-40).

Mk 9:38-40

John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.” Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us.”

GOSPEL COMMENTARY

Today’s Gospel warns us against the erroneous attitudes of EXCLUSIVISM and MONOPOLY in the apostolate. The above-mentioned episode teaches us that we cannot fall into the trap of jealousy and envy when we see others do something good for the sake of the Kingdom of God. How many calumnies, persecution, injustice and harm were levelled against many souls due to this monopolistic and exclusivist mentality in the history of the Catholic Church.

Different Christian institutions and groups should work together for the sake of the good of souls and should reject the idea that “good is not good unless I am the one who does it”. Rather, we should accept Our Lord’s teaching that GOOD IS GOOD, EVEN IF IT IS NOT I WHO DO IT, for the HOLY SPIRIT, THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST, BLOWS WHERE HE PLEASES (cf. Jn 3:8).

Saint Josemaría said: “Rejoice, when you see others working in good apostolic activities. And ask God to grant them abundant grace and that they may respond to that grace. Then, you, follow your way: be convinced that it’s the only way for you” (The Way, no. 965).
