Aug. 22: WHY IS MARY CALLED QUEEN?

August 22: WHY IS MARY CALLED QUEEN?

The terms Queen and Lady with reference to the Virgin are not metaphors. By means of them, we designate a true pre-eminence and an authentic dignity and power in heaven and on earth.

The prophet Isaiah speaks of a child to be born whose dominion lasts forever: For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, from David’s throne, and over his kingdom, which he confirms and sustains by judgment and justice, both now and forever (Is 9: 1-6).

And St. Luke recounts the words of the Archangel Gabriel to Mary during the Annunciation which speaks of the same eternal Kingdom:  “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his Kingdom there will be no end.”

Thus, as Mother of the King, Mary is truly and properly Queen. She is the apex of creation, and effectively the first entirely human person of the universe.

God, who made the Mother of your Son to be our Mother and our Queen, graciously grant that, sustained by her intercession, we may attain in the heavenly Kingdom the glory promised to your children. Through our Lord. (Collect prayer)
