DO PERFECT MARRIAGES EXIST?

DO PERFECT MARRIAGES EXIST?

I’m inclined to think otherwise, in so far as the subjects are concerned, because we human beings are imperfect and so thus all human relationships… All marriages face difficulties, ups and downs, trials and problems,… “plates fly” in some marriages, as Pope Francis put it, simply because marriage consists of two imperfect people –husband and wife− who frequently commit mistakes and errors along with the different problems life brings with it.

Nevertheless, from the viewpoint of the spouses’ attitude and determination, we can speak of a “perfect” marriage. And what leads to its perfection is the spouses’ resolve to live the virtue of HUMILITY daily which will lead them to acknowledge their mistakes, to forgive and to ask forgiveness, to forget themselves, to be understanding, and to begin anew in their daily struggle to foster and nurture their love for each other and for God through little details of ordinary life: a smile, a hug, loving words, a simple caress, a helping gesture… day in and day out, till the end of their life.  And, in this sense, “perfect” marriages exist after all.

A “perfect” marriage is made up of two imperfect people−husband and wife−, but who humbly struggle daily to love each other and who refuse to give up on each other out of mutual love, out of love for their children and for God, till the rest of their lives.

For this to be possible, God’s grace is necessary. It is of utmost importance that the spouses pray daily, frequent the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation (or Confession), have a filial devotion to Our Lady and do their evening examination of conscience…for all these are the sources of divine grace which they need in order to overcome the daily trials and difficulties they encounter in their conjugal life.

Let us pray to God for all the marriages in the world, especially those who are undergoing difficult moments.
